As a group leader, you can expect to face legal and ethical issues in your interactions with groups and group members. Professional counselors and counselors-in-training must learn to navigate complex ethical dilemmas that may arise. As a group leader, you rely on the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW) Best Practice Guidelines, and the Multicultural and Social Justice Competence Principles for Group Workers to guide your ethical decision-making. Consultation and supervision are also highly recommended when faced with ethical decisions.

This week, you look closely at legal and ethical standards that govern group work. Familiarity with these standards enables you to develop sound plans for group work and to address ethical dilemmas and legal concerns when they arise.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

• Design strategies/interventions for group sessions*
• Apply strategies for incorporating diversity in group work*
• Apply strategies for assessing potential group members for appropriate fit in counseling groups*
• Apply knowledge of informed consent to the design of counseling groups*
