Counselors-in-training are sometimes confused about how to integrate counseling theories into group work. Counseling theories influence the decisions leaders make as they plan groups, as well as the techniques and interventions they use to facilitate the group process. For example, a theory may influence the goals the leader establishes for the group, whether the group is focused on the member’s past childhood experience (as in psychodynamic therapy), the member’s thought process (as in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and/or member strengths and successes (as in solution-focused work).

While caution must be taken when making the transition from individual to group counseling, this does not preclude the effective use of counseling theory to group work. In fact, most theoretical systems have been applied across individual and group work. The selection is frequently based on the counselor’s preference and training.

As you review the resources, notice which theoretical approaches are most appealing to you. Theory serves as a foundation for how problems occur, how change can be facilitated, and which interventions and strategies will be most effective in creating the desired change. As you review each theoretical approach, make notes in preparation for the Assignment.
