HLTH 6110/HLTH 8110: Exploring Health Education in the 21st Century | Week 2

“The history of health and health education is important…By understanding the past, you can appreciate the present and become a leader in this emerging profession.”
—(Cottrell, Girvan, Seabert, Spear & McKenzie 2018)

While it remains true that in the context of health education, the profession is considered emerging, educating about health has existed since the dawn of humans. Exploring the history of the health field or of health education itself can provide health educators with critical insights into how to address health issues today. It is true that the health issues of the past are not necessarily the health issues of the future. Yet, certain approaches, strategies, and solutions that were instrumental in promoting health in the past remind us of the importance of professionals committed toward preserving health and promoting well-being. Milestones in health from promoting access to clean water to the germ theory of disease demonstrate the crucial role health educators play when promoting health and well-being.

This week, you explore the role of health educators in health milestones and the field of health education and review concepts of the history of health and health education. You also explore health issues important for the health education profession and research peer-reviewed literature and data-based resources.

The history of public health and health education is replete with significant milestones that have contributed to the preservation of health and well-being. From the discovery of antibiotics and the processes of vaccination to the development of health programs aimed at reducing obesity and violence, health educators strive to increase awareness, modify perceptions of health behaviors, and implement strategies to promote overall health. Consider, for example, how health educators may be involved in the development of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention workshops or a health educator who is responsible for implementing a school-wide hand washing and basic hygiene program for children attending a public school. By understanding the health milestones achieved by health educators, the better prepared you will be in promoting health and well-being.

For this Discussion, review the Interactive Public Health Timeline media piece in the Learning Resources for this week and select one of the significant milestones for public health. Consider how this milestone relates to health education.

Note: In grading every required Discussion posting, your Instructor uses a Discussion Rubric, located in the Course Information area. Review the Rubric prior to completing your Discussion.

This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding to your colleagues. You must begin responding to your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in-depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your peers are responding to your post, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from peers. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources that you used so that your peers can read it for themselves. See your Discussion Rubric in the Course Information Tab for specific grading requirements.

By Day 3

Post a description of the milestone that you selected. Explain the role of health educators in effecting/contributing to this milestone. Then explain how the role of the health educator, for this milestone, contributes to the field of health education and health promotion today. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 5

Remember to begin interaction with your colleagues in the Discussion and continue engaging through Day 7 and describe which two areas of responsibility for health education are relevant to your colleague’s milestone and explain why.
