What is a philosophy and how does it relate to the practice of health education?
As a health educator, the strategies and approaches that you will employ to address an individual’s or community’s health issues will depend on what orientation you adopt for professional practice. That is, your personal values and beliefs, as well as professional ethics and standards will be reflected in your world of work. Although, within the greater health education arena, certain understandings of how one engages in the practice of health education may exist, it is up to the individual health educator to define their role and method of practice.
This week, you examine philosophy statements for health education and review concepts related to the philosophical foundations of health education.

Discussion VLog: My Personal Health Education Philosophy
Within the field of health education, Welle, Russell, and Kittleson (1995) determined that five dominant philosophies of health education/promotion exist. These include:
- Behavior change philosophy
- Cognitive-based philosophy
- Decision-making philosophy
- Freeing or functioning philosophy
- Social change philosophy
Although the five identified philosophies for health education and promotion demonstrate that health educators may align specifically to one orientation versus another, these five philosophies do not fully encompass how health educators practice in the field. In fact, while one philosophy may serve to help explain how a certain health education strategy is introduced to an individual or community, another philosophy may be better aligned to the true needs of that individual or community. Thus, in serving to empower individuals and communities to promote health and well-being, the health educator is also empowered to develop their own personal orientation, their foundational approach to health education practice.
For this Discussion, review the Learning Resources for this week. Reflect on the philosophies for health education/promotion and consider which philosophy may help inform your philosophy statement for health education.

This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding to your colleagues. You must begin responding to your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in-depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your peers are responding to your post, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from peers. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources that you used so that your peers can read it for themselves. See your Discussion Rubric in the Course Information Tab for specific grading requirements.
By Day 3
Post your philosophy statement for health education in a Video Log (Vlog). This will require you to create a 2 – 3-minute video of yourself explaining your health education philosophy. In the vlog, explain which one of the five philosophies of health education and promotion most closely align with your philosophy statement and why. Then, describe how you would explain your philosophy of health education to a colleague or peer. Be specific and provide examples. Please also provide the written text of your Philosophy Vlog with the references cited in APA in a proceeding post. Please use your resources in the Kaltura Media Uploader section of the course to create your “Health Education Philosophy Vlog.”
By Day 5
Remember to begin interaction with your colleagues in the Discussion no later than Day 5 and continue engaging through Day 7 and suggest an alternative philosophy of health education and promotion that might help your colleagues in defining their philosophy statement and explain why. Then, suggest one additional idea, concept, or perspective related to health education that your colleagues should consider in revising their philosophy statement.
