HLTH 6110/HLTH 8110: Exploring Health Education in the 21st Century | Week 5
Is working toward modifying an individual’s or community’s approach to health and well-being ethical? How might health behavior modification represent a potential ethical dilemma for health educators?
As a health educator, your day-to-day work will require that you act according to the professional standards and code of ethics for your field. In addition to your individual moral compass, integrating professional standards as well as the appropriate code of ethics will protect you as well as your population’s or clients’ best interests.
This week you explore the code of ethics for health education and reflect on the role of the health educator in adhering to code of ethics in professional practice and review concepts related to ethics for health education.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Evaluate the Society for Public Health Education code of ethics for the role of health educators in ethical practice of health education
- Analyze steps for development of expertise and competencies as a health educator
- Identify concepts related to ethics and health education

Discussion: Ethical Scenarios
While it is true that seeking to preserve the health and well-being of individuals as well as communities is a noble effort, it is not without its challenges with regard to ethical conduct and practice. Consider for example, the role of clarifying the benefits of placebos in clinical trials in developing countries for progressive diseases such as cancer. Is the detriment to some for the preservation of the many, ethical practice? What about the mandatory reporting of HIV status in public schools? Quandaries such as these may present challenges for health educators in practice.
By adhering to the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) code of ethics as well as abiding by the Seven Areas of Responsibility for Health Educators, you will ensure the professional delivery of health education for target populations. As a health educator, you must ensure that your client’s best interest as well as your professional capacity is in line with the standards set forth by the profession.
For this Discussion, you will be assigned to a specific ethical scenario. Download the Ethics Scenarios provided in this week’s Learning Resources and review the scenario that you are assigned. Consider how the SOPHE code of ethics may apply to the that scenario you were assigned.
Note: In grading every required Discussion posting, your Instructor uses a Discussion Rubric, located in the Course Information area. Review the Rubric prior to completing your Discussion.
This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding to your colleagues. You must begin responding to your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in-depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your peers are responding to your post, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from peers. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources that you used so that your peers can read it for themselves. See your Discussion Rubric in the Course Information Tab for specific grading requirements.
By Day 3
Post an explanation of which article(s) of the SOPHE code of ethics might best inform the role of health educators in the ethical scenario you were assigned and why. Be specific and provide examples of how these articles of the SOPHE code of ethics applies to the practice of health education. Then provide a brief description of two article(s) of the SOPHE code of ethics you believe are most important for informing your practice in the field of health education and explain why.
By Day 5
Remember to begin interaction with your colleagues in the Discussion and continue engaging through Day 7 and suggest two alternative articles of the SOPHE code of ethics your colleagues did not describe but are of value to the practice of health education. Explain how the articles that you propose might apply to the ethical practice of health education in the scenario for your colleague’s post.
