HLTH 6110/HLTH 8110: Exploring Health Education in the 21st Century | Week 9

Where do health educators work? How do professional organizations contribute to the practice of health education?

As you develop your personal and professional identity as a health educator, you will likely be exposed to various opportunities to practice your skills in promoting health and well-being. Engaging in work with various populations and settings might challenge your skills and may provide new opportunities to refine your skill set to better enhance the practice of health education. Also, through networking in professional organizations, you may develop a better sense of how you would like to engage in health education practice.

This week, you explore populations and settings for the practice of health education. You examine the skills and qualities of health educators in health education practice and explore professional organizations for health education. You also apply health education strategies and methodologies as you submit your Final Project.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Identify populations and settings for the practice of health education
  • Evaluate skills and knowledge of health educators in health education practice
  • Identify professional organizations for health education
  • Develop job description for health education practice
  • Apply health education strategies and methodologies to a case study
  • Analyze areas of responsibility for health education practice in relation to health education strategies and methodologies

Electing to pursue a career where you serve the community through the promotion of health and well-being is a noble cause. In seeking to establish healthy behavior, you will likely encounter both rewarding and challenging experiences. In practice, you will likely implement programs aimed at different populations and in different settings to address various health issues. The strategies and methodologies that you will employ in these different settings will require you to demonstrate your skills as well as uphold the standards of practice as set forth by professional organizations.

For this Discussion, review the Learning Resources for this week. Reflect on where you would like to work as a health educator, including which target population you are most interested in helping. Consider the skills or qualities you believe are most important for health educators to possess when working in this setting or with this population. Then research and select two professional organizations that may provide opportunities for developing the skills and knowledge needed to work in this capacity.

Note: In grading every required Discussion posting, your Instructor uses a Discussion Rubric, located in the Course Information area. Review the Rubric prior to completing your Discussion.

This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding to your colleagues. You must begin responding to your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in-depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your peers are responding to your post, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from peers. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources that you used so that your peers can read it for themselves. See your Discussion Rubric in the Course Information Tab for specific grading requirements.

By Day 3

Post a description of where you would like to work as a health educator and explain why. Describe a target setting or population that you are interested in working with and explain which skills or knowledge of health educators are most important for working with this population and setting. Then, describe two professional organizations that may best assist you in developing skills and knowledge to work in this capacity. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 5

Remember to begin interaction with your colleagues in the Discussion and continue engaging through Day 7 and create a brief (300 words or less) job description for your colleagues based on the setting, population, and skills or knowledge your colleagues described. Be sure to include the formal qualifications (e.g., education and past experiences) and responsibilities for performing this job. Then, explain the value of identifying these qualifications and responsibilities for the practice of health education.
