MGMT 8005M: Organizational Perspectives and Implications for Leaders | Week 7

The democratic leader’s influence is far more subtle and symbolic. He or she spends time listening, summarizing, integrating, and guiding what is being said, making key interventions and summoning images, ideas, and values that help those involved to make sense of the situation with which they are dealing. In managing the meanings and interpretations assigned to a situation, the leader in effect wields a form of symbolic power that exerts a decisive influence on how people perceive their realities and hence, the way they act.

An organization’s culture is often revealed and communicated through its use of symbols. These symbols take many forms, including the organization’s vision, core values, and purpose (Bolman & Deal, 2017). For example, consider the symbols of the United States of America, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and the American flag. Rituals, attitudes, beliefs, and stories surround these symbols, which help explain the culture of America. These symbols create a mindset of how things work in the United States. Symbols also create this mindset in organizations. Think of a symbol in an organization with which you are familiar. How does it set the tone or represent the culture of the organization? In what ways is this symbol used for leadership?

This week, you will explore symbols in organizational culture and how they impact leadership and organizations.

Throughout an organization, many different cultures among departments, divisions, branches, and work units can exist. Differences in organizational culture are typically a result of leadership style: The more control the leader exerts over the organizational unit, the more his or her style will impact the culture within the unit. This insight is a product of the seminal research conducted by Bass (1985), which was later developed in more detail by Schein (1990). Schein explained that the fundamental role of a leader is to shape organizational culture in order to promote change. How innovation and change are led directly reflects on a leader’s success and organizational effectiveness.

For this Discussion, review Chapter 13, “Culture in Action,” in Bolman and Deal (2017). The chapter provides various short scenarios and examples of management styles and culture. Examine two different scenarios from the chapter, and consider how the leader’s management styles impacts the organizational culture.

Day 3: Initial Post

Post by Day 3 an analysis and evaluation of two management styles of your choice from Chapter 13’s scenarios, and examine their impact on organizational culture. For each scenario, analyze and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the style and explain which leadership style and type of organizational culture you think would be the best for the business. Provide a rationale for your choice. Your post may have two sections, labeled Scenario 1 and Scenario 2.

Day 5: Response

Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues’ postings. In your responses consider the following about culture and symbols.
