MGMT 8007M: Complexity and Applied Systems Thinking | Week 9
Leadership is shifting from the industrial age to the knowledge era.
—Uhl-Bien and Marion (2008)
Toffler (1980) noted that there were three major advancements in history: agriculture, industrialization, and information or knowledge processing. The composition of the developed world is a mixture of industry and information processing. The industrial phase is characterized by mass production, mass education, and standardization. The information or knowledge phase is more characterized by creativity, flexibility, adaptability, mobility, customization, and innovative interpretation. Complexity leadership theory addresses this knowledge phase from a complex systems perspective. As Uhl-Bien and Marion (2008) noted, leadership is shifting from the industrial age to the knowledge era. They continued “leadership models of the last century have been products of top-down, bureaucratic paradigms. These models are eminently effective for an economy premised on physical production but are not well-suited for a more knowledge-oriented economy” (p. 185).
This week, you explore a new leadership paradigm, complexity leadership, along with new leadership concepts, such as complexity, adaptation, and resiliency.

- Analyze benefits and challenges of complexity leadership theory
- Apply complexity theory to management or leadership
- Evaluate organizational resilience
Skills
