Whether a person realizes it or not, his or her body regularly uses compensatory mechanisms, such as adaptive and maladaptive responses. These compensatory mechanisms help the body respond to stressors or triggers. While sometimes these automatic physiological responses are positive and assist the body in maintaining proper function, other times, they may result in adverse health effects. Consider the case of Gwendolyn King. She experienced symptoms of an unknown cause for 2 years before being diagnosed with lupus. These symptoms included joint pain in her hands, fever, rashes on various parts of her body, and eventually pain in her knees and ankles. Initially, she was believed to have arthritis. However, doctors later diagnosed her with lupus (Bennett, 2012). For 2 years, King experienced compensatory mechanisms that were primarily maladaptive. In her case, the maladaptive responses were symptoms of an underlying and potentially fatal autoimmune disorder.

As an advanced practice nurse, it is important for you to identify the root of compensatory mechanisms and underlying responses, as they could be signs of infections and immune disorders.   • Review Chapter 6 and Chapter 8 in the Huether and McCance text, as well as the Yi, et al, article in the Learning Resources. Reflect on the concept of maladaptive responses to disorders.
  • Select two of the following immune disorders: HIV, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and/or systemic lupus E (SLE).
  • Think about the pathophysiology of each disorder you selected. Consider the compensatory mechanisms that the disorders trigger. Then, compare the resulting maladaptive and physiological responses of the two disorders.
  • Consider the types of drugs that would be prescribed to patients to treat symptoms associated with these disorders and why.
  • Select one of the following patient factors: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Consider how your selected factor might impact the disorder. Then, reflect on how your selected factor might impact the effects of prescribed drugs, as well as any measures you might take to help reduce any negative side effects.

By Day 3

Post a brief description of the pathophysiology of the immune disorders you selected. Explain how the maladaptive and physiological responses of the two disorders differ. Then, describe the types of drugs that would be prescribed to patients to treat symptoms associated with these immune disorders and why.
