NURS 6331: Week 5: Learner-Centered Classrooms – Hybrid Essay Assignment Paper
The dean asked two nurse educators, Luke and Carin, to come to his office for a meeting. The dean explained that though both educators teach the same introductory course and content, Luke’s students have been performing noticeably better on assessments. In addition, student reviews from the past three semesters indicate that Luke’s students feel more empowered and knowledgeable than Carin’s. The dean does not doubt Carin’s dedication to her students but wonders why they are not experiencing the same growth as Luke’s students. With this concern in mind, he asks each educator to describe the structure of their upcoming hybrid lesson, “Stereotypes in the Medical Profession.”
Carin states that she will first introduce stereotypes through an in-class lecture. In her lecture, she has included media of medical professionals who have been the victims of stereotypes and a quiz to assess student learning. For the online portion of the lesson, students will participate in a case study, submitting their answers to the submission link in the online classroom.
Luke states that he will be teaching a “flipped” version of Carin’s lesson. By “flipping” the lesson, Luke places the online time before the on-site time. He will require students to access a prerecorded lecture before coming to class. The lecture will include the same topics and media as Carin’s; however, students will be able to access the audio and text-based versions of his lecture at their own pace. When students attend the on-site portion of the lesson, Luke will spend the first few minutes of the class reviewing key concepts and questions. He will then split students into groups and distribute the case studies. Luke will visit with groups as they collaborate on the case study, engaging students in teachable moments, critical thinking, and problem solving strategies. Students will submit their case studies at the close of the lesson.
What pros and cons can be seen in Carin and Luke’s strategies? As a nurse educator, how might you tap into the power provided by hybrid environments?
This week, you explore how the hybrid environment has and will continue to transform the field of nursing education.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
- Reflect on the benefits of the hybrid environment
- Submit a final version of a lesson plan for a video presentation

Discussion: Promoting Learner-Centered Lessons in Hybrid Environments
The hybrid environment, also known as blended or mixed-mode, allows educators to mix-and-match teaching strategies, learning objects, and instructional tools for maximum impact. When carefully designed, the hybrid environment also provides the opportunity for educators to capitalize on the benefits of both face-to-face and online instruction to meet the needs of all stakeholders involved.
In this Discussion, you examine how nurse educators combine an on-site activity with an online activity to create a comprehensive, learner-centered lesson. You will continue using the learning need, objectives, and audience of learners from your Discussions in Weeks 2–4.
To prepare
- Reflect on the hybrid learning environment. As a nurse educator, how might you best combine the benefits of both the on-site and online learning environment to achieve and reinforce learning objectives?
- Review this week’s Learning Resources on hybrid environments, as well as the technologies educators use to create learner-centered lessons.
By Day 3
Post based on your review of the resources for the week, how might nurse educators use the hybrid environment to enhance the instruction provided to students, staff, and patients.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
By Day 6
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using the following approach:
Provide a minimum of three meaningful edits, insights, and/or probing questions that could help your colleague to enhance the learning activity.
