COUN 6250/COUN 8250/COUN 6250A/COUN 6250F: Group Process and Dynamics | Week 4

Beginnings determine endings in most significant ways and the two are inextricably connected.

—Dr. Gertrud Mander

This week, you begin your exploration of the stages of group process. The early phase of group development is a time for orienting members to the group and modeling norms for the sessions to follow. You may be wondering what behaviors and interactions can be expected from group members as you initiate your first meeting and how you might prepare to facilitate the process through the beginning stage. What strategies might prove beneficial? Together, through these early interactions, the leader and the members establish and confirm the group goals and begin to facilitate the process of meeting them.

To illustrate these concepts, this week you will view counselors Marianne and Gerald Corey in Evolution of a Group as they co-lead a group through the beginning stage of building cohesion and establishing trust. As you watch the video, note which leader skills and strategies effectively facilitate the process during the initial stage of group.

You also will continue to develop your Group Proposal with your cohort group.
