COUN 6250/COUN 8250/COUN 6250A/COUN 6250F: Group Process and Dynamics | Week 8

The ending should be clear and focused —not a petering out.

–Irvin D. Yalom, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy

Just as the planning and initial stages of group laid the groundwork, so the termination stage of group adds the final touches to the plan. The ending may be satisfying and welcome; it may be sad or stressful; or, it may be bittersweet. Goodbyes and endings are significant in people’s lives, and some individuals have difficulty handling these situations. Individuals may associate endings with death, abandonment, the finiteness of life, or childhood traumas. For these reasons, group leaders need to be intentional about how they end the group. They must strategize ways to facilitate the members’ transitions out of the group into the real world—ways that help them to reflect on their group experiences and plan how they will then implement the changes made.

Termination is also an opportunity for leaders to evaluate the group’s effectiveness. Group members may complete a formal evaluation that provides beneficial information for group leaders as they continue to advance their skills and effectiveness. These findings typically are used to help decide whether a program should be adopted, continued, modified for improvement, or discontinued.

For this week, you will explore strategies for the termination of the group. You examine behaviors that are characteristic of the ending stage of group and develop leader strategies to assist members in handling the pain of loss and embrace a sense of closure. You also examine ways to measure both the subjective experience and the level of goal attainment by the members of the group.

This week you will develop your termination strategy(ies) and method of evaluation for your Group Proposal. At the end of the group, some members have accomplished their goals and are ready to say goodbye, while others may require additional resources. It is the group leader’s responsibility to develop a strategy to facilitate goodbyes and to help members consolidate their learning as they prepare for the termination of the group.

For this Discussion, you will identify at least two resources that are applicable to your group that may be provided to members as part of the termination process to facilitate continued support. This might include, but is not exclusive to, referrals for mutual help support groups, telephone crisis-lines, bibliotherapy, or an educational podcast. You will also need to plan how you would evaluate the success of your group. Leaders will want to know more about the members’ satisfaction with the overall group as well as the extent to which the group goals were achieved.

You will receive feedback from your Instructor in the Discussion board. This is the time to clear up any unanswered questions as you near the end of this assignment.

To prepare:

  • Watch Segment 5, “The Ending Stage” of Evolution of a Group video.
  • Review Part V, “The Ending Stage” in Groups in Action: Evolution and Challenges to give context to the video.
  • Consider how these Learning Resources inform your selection of termination strategies.

By Day 3

Post in your assigned cohort Discussion board for Week 8. You will each post to your specific Discussion board as you develop your concepts. Your Instructor will respond to your group, answer questions, and provide guidance. The three Discussions (Weeks 3, 4, and 8) are dedicated to the development of your group proposal and are considered a collaborative platform to assist you in your planning. Following each weekly Discussion, you should revise the draft of your collaborative group proposal, integrate your Instructor’s feedback, and edit your work. Your weekly Discussion participation will be graded according to the rubric specific to the Cohort Group Proposal Discussion Board. You may view the other cohort Discussion boards, but you are only responsible for posting in your assigned cohort link.

  • Explain how you will terminate your group. Be specific in describing the strategies you would use.
  • Provide at least 2 supports or resources that you would offer members in need of help outside the group.
  • Explain how you would evaluate the group experience. (This can be a more subjective gauge of group satisfaction.)
  • Explain how you would measure progress toward group goals. (This should be an objective measure of group outcomes, such as a rating scale, standardized instrument, or a questionnaire.)
