HLTH 6110/HLTH 8110: Exploring Health Education in the 21st Century | Week 7

Charles is a health educator who has been hired to develop a health education program for diabetes awareness and prevention. In planning and designing his program, he has determined that his target population will consist of middle-aged adults. One of the central themes of Charles’ program will be to reinforce healthy eating and exercise. However, he is a bit confused as to how he will communicate and teach these approaches to a varied audience.

What considerations should Charles keep in mind while planning and designing his health education program? How do attributes of health educators influence the health education strategies or methodologies implemented in health education programs?

This week, you examine the attributes of effective health educators and consider how you would incorporate these attributes in practice. You explore steps health educators can take to become more effective providers.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Analyze attributes of effective health educators
  • Apply strategies to become effective providers of health education
  • Analyze development opportunities for effective health education practice
  • Analyze steps for development of expertise and competencies as a health educator
  • Apply individual strengths regarding professional development in health education and promotion

What does it mean to be an effective health educator?

Educational attainment, credentialing, and work experience contribute to attributes of health educators in practice. However, might health educators possess additional unique attributes that make them strategically positioned to be more effective? As individuals, we all possess unique attributes and talent that contribute to success in specific areas of day-to-day life. Considering the attributes that you believe health educators should have may help you to identify those attributes that you already possess as well as identify potential areas to develop.

For this Discussion, reflect on those attributes you believe effective educators should possess. Then consider how you might incorporate those attributes into your current or future role as a health educator.

Note: In grading every required Discussion posting, your Instructor uses a Discussion Rubric, located in the Course Information area. Review the Rubric prior to completing your Discussion.

This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding to your colleagues. You must begin responding to your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in-depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your peers are responding to your post, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from peers. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources that you used so that your peers can read it for themselves. See your Discussion Rubric in the Course Information Tab for specific grading requirements.

By Day 3

Post a description of three attributes that you believe effective educators should possess and explain why. Then explain how you would incorporate these attributes to become an effective provider of health education and why. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 5

Remember to begin interaction with your colleagues in the Discussion and continue engaging through Day 7 and identify professional development opportunities that your colleagues could complete that would strengthen the attributes identified. Then explain how engaging in development opportunities might be important for effective health education practice and why.
