“I find that because of modern technological evolution and our global economy, and as a result of the great increase in population, our world has greatly changed: it has become much smaller. However, our perceptions have not evolved at the same pace; we continue to cling to old national demarcations and the old feelings of ‘us’ and ‘them’.”

—Dalai Lama

Management and leadership must consider what it takes to thrive in a global economy. Recently, several new organizational structures have emerged that change the role of traditional Management. These structures open the role of Manager up to being more coordinative in nature.

Holacracy and ‘Results-Only Work Environment’ (ROWE) are two examples of organizational structures that focus on team leadership, autonomy, and decision making.  Leaders have a big task in the global economy: they need to inspire knowledge sharing and creation. Leaders and managers need to consider the diversity of cultures when leading teams. And, leaders and managers need to consider if the traditional transactional role of a manager may be changing.

Before you begin this Discussion, be sure to review the readings and media.
