MGMT 8005M: Organizational Perspectives and Implications for Leaders | Week 10

Throughout the course, you reviewed and applied both Bolman and Deal’s (2017) four frames for reframing organizations and Morgan’s metaphors. Becoming aware of these tools is the first step in making sense of organizations. However, applying each of the theories in isolation of one another can cause one to miss critical insights about an organization, in particular regarding the effects of interactions among frames and metaphors. Identifying these interactions helps accurately pinpoint the causes of problems and ensures inclusive and consistent communication about change and innovation.

For example, consider two employees who are not cooperating effectively at work. On the surface, it may look as though this is a human resource issue of individuals struggling to find common ground due to differences in personality or personal preferences. However, when inspecting the case through the political lens, the manager might find that one of the employees aims at “politically assassinating” the other employee in order to keep him or her from climbing the corporate ladder. The root causes of this behavior may be individual ambition or reflect organizational culture. The correct identification of cause and effect relationships is critical to effectively resolve conflict and prevent future problems in the organization.

This week, you will apply Bolman and Deal’s four frames along with Morgan’s metaphors for your Final Project.
