MGMT 8007M: Complexity and Applied Systems Thinking | Week 2

Systems science provides a somewhat unique mode of inquiry in revealing not just how one kind of system, say a biological system, works, but rather how all kinds of systems work.

What does a system look like? Some ways in which something can be organized include type, size, color, geography, alphanumerical, and chronological. One common way is to organize by hierarchy; that is, we see systems containing subsystems. For example, we can look at a large organization and see that it might contain divisions, which might contain subdivisions, and so on down to small work teams. A more common term for a subsystem might be a part, or even a component. Another example is a laptop. How many subsystems or parts can be quickly identified within a laptop? Consider the smart phone—what subsystems are evident? Systems engineering is an approach to building something using multiple tools, techniques, and systems.

The INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook (2015) defines systems engineering as:

An interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, and then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem: operations, cost and schedule, performance, training and support, test, manufacturing, and disposal. Systems engineering integrates all the disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to production to operation. Systems engineering considers both the business and the technical needs of all customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the user needs (p. 11).

This week, you examine how these subsystems or components are structured within an organization and how to apply this information to organizational leadership and management. You also begin the Final Project by summarizing how systems thinking and relational dynamics influence leadership and management within the selected organization.

What implications does this parable have for how leaders and managers view their organizations if they only look at the parts individually instead of as a whole?

Consider the various parts of the organization and how looking at these parts as a whole might inform your understanding of the organization. Think of this Discussion as a classroom presentation, wherein you post your ideas and respond to questions.
