MMPP 6280: Policy and Politics in American Institutions | Week 2

One of the central elements of the Constitution of the United States and of the American Republic in general is the notion of “separation of powers.” However, as Hudson states in American Democracy in Peril (2017), Americans often mistakenly equate separation of governmental powers with democracy. One reason for this may lie in our collective misunderstanding of the distinctions between a republican form of government and a democracy. This week, you will explore these distinctions, evaluating the scope of power afforded to each of the three branches in the Constitution but also the limits of this power.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Evaluate the scope of power the Framers allocated to each branch of government
  • Evaluate the limits and implications of power allocated to the central government and to the states
  • Evaluate Anti-Federalist views

One of the more pressing concerns shared by Founding Fathers of the Republic and the Framers of the Constitution was fear of tyranny, either from a single individual, such as a monarch, or from a group. In this week’s readings, you are presented with the Federalist/Anti-Federalist debate concerning the scope and limits of government power and its implications for contemporary America as well as abroad.

For this Discussion, read Federalist Papers No. 67, 78–83 and Anti-Federalists, Cato No. 5, and Brutus No. 11, along with the other required readings for Week 1.

By Day 3

Post your support for the argument of the Federalists or the counter argument of the Anti-Federalists, with respect to the scope and limits of power. Include in your argument the implications of the scope and limits of power for contemporary America and abroad. Using examples from the readings and additional sources from the Walden Library, support your opinions empirically.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 5

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.
