The percentages mentioned in the beginning were 1/3 of patients didn’t know the REASON of the medication and 86% didn’t know the side effects of the medications they are taking. To help and drop those I would make sure they every single patient knows why they are taking all their medications and know what side effects can occur with each one. Taking your time and making sure they know this education is very important when It comes to medications. I want them to understand it and be able to repeat it to me before they leave.

The 4 elements in the process mentioned are: make sure you patients know the name, dosage, the purpose and the side effects of the medication they are being given. I would not want to add much more to the process as this is all ready going to be a lot of information for a patient and/or the family member or caregiver. What I may add is to repeat. If they can repeat the information, then you know they are leaving educated and aware.

My overall opinion is that this video is short but informative. I was not aware that so many patients were not aware of the side effects of the medications that they are taking. In my opinion this is one of the most important especially as many meds can cause severe side effects. If you don’t know what side effects to look for how can you know to get to the help before a severe reaction happens?

The video had mentioned that a third of the patients did not know what the purpose of their medication was, and that 86% did not know the side effects of their medications. When I am getting a new medication prescribed I personally feel bombarded with information and can leave the place not remembering a thing. If I were to be informing a patient on the purpose of the medication, aside verbally talking about it, I would also provide them with the purpose written in layman’s terms for them to take home. I wouldn’t provide them with a big packet but maybe a small card that they could store close to their medications and on the reverse side I could include the side effects associated with the drug.

  • How do you feel about the four elements in the process? Would you add one or two more elements to help ensure quality care? If so, what and why.

The four elements in the process are Name of the medication, Dosage, Purpose of the medication, and Any side effects that go along with the medication. I feel this is a good standard process to follow and the patient should be able to understand the medication. During this time the patient will also ask questions if needed. Personally, I do not think I would add anything because after learning the four parts I would feel comfortable with the medication and can ask questions as we go through the information.

  • What is your overall opinion of the video content?

I think the video content was great. It was short and directly to the point. I feel this would be a fun video to show during training to remind people that taking the time to implement the four elements in the process really does help patients, and with the video reiterating how many people do not know the purpose or side effects of their medications, the staff will really take the process of explaining medications more seriously.
